Got hold of some old nostalgic photos of our first successful climb of Sahyadri’s highest rock pinnacle BAAN near Sakurli. Baan (बाण) can be seen prominently from col between Ratangad and Khuta while climbing from Samrad and while exiting from Sandhan Valley. This was 700 feet tall pinnacle which was attempted and climbed from front facing route as shown in the photos.
It took 12 days (22nd March to 2nd April 1986) for us to climb this with bare minimum equipment and almost all of it was free climbing except for anchoring and the top portion which was climbed using artificial rock climbing techniques with expansion bolts, which were required to be hand drilled with drill bit and hammer in hanging position and use to take 20-30 minutes per bolt. Missing hammer means injuries to your climbing arms.
We use to go on the mountain in front of the pinnacle to shoot this venture. That time this valley “now famous as SANDHAN VALLEY” was not known to most of the people. Regular leopard calls and sightings in this jungle kept us on our toes all the time.
